Tai Chi Class for Balance, Mobility, and Stress Relief

Intro

At Metamora Martial Arts, our tai chi chuan class teaches traditional old Yang-style tai chi designed to improve balance, flexibility, mental clarity, and overall well-being.

Classes are held weekly on Tuesday through the Metamora Park District on the historic Metamora Square. We focus on both health and practical movement skills.

Metamora Martial Arts was named 2026’s Best Martial Arts School in Woodford County and a finalist for Best Karate / Martial Arts School in the Peoria 2025 Community’s Choice Awards.

Who This Class Is For
  • Adults aged 18 and older (often ages 55+ attend regularly).

  • Beginners with no prior tai chi experience.

  • People seeking gentle exercise, better balance, and reduced stress.

  • Students interested in both the health and soft martial arts aspects of tai chi.

What You’ll Learn

In this class, students explore…

  • The long form of Old Yang-style tai chi chuan, a traditional sequence of movements.

  • The animal forms and element forms of Hsing-i chuan.
  • Elements of internal martial arts, including slow controlled movement and mindful body awareness.

  • Practical self-defense applications tied to the forms.

  • Improved balance, flexibility, and mental focus through movement and breath.

This blend of health-focused practice and real movement helps students move with more confidence and ease in daily life.

Our son started attending classes last January, during a free trial. After the first day, he begged us to sign him up! We immediately noticed a difference in his self confidence! Over the last 3 months, we have noticed a change in his physical activity level at home, eating habits are better, he's spending less time on electronics (always a plus!), as well as many other positive changes. Karate has been a great addition to our weekly schedule and we are always excited for class! Sensei Adam is an amazing instructor and the kids all seem to really enjoy learning from him!

10/10 recommend. My son has been going to metamora martial arts for a year now. Sensei Adam has not only taught him martial arts he has taught him and the other participants life lessons about team work and perseverance. I would recommend metamora martial arts to anyone interested in learning martial arts.

Adam's program was great for my young daughter! I really liked the extra attention from the black belts in the class (Ms Lois especially). The mix of group and individual work really helped my daughter progress well through the ranks.

So much fun!!! We learned some basic self-defense and it was absolutely perfect for my first self-defense class ever! Adam was inclusive and moved at just the right pace for everyone involved. I took a lot from it

Adam was a great instructor for our self-defense seminar! Our group had a lot of questions and special requests, and Adam accommodated all of it expertly.

I attended a self-defense seminar, which was well planned, informative, and interactive. There was ample instruction, demonstration, and practice with the various techniques we were taught. Adam (instructor) and Lois (assistant) provided feedback while practicing and encouraged questions about variations or alternate situations. I would highly recommend the seminar for all ages, as knowing how to defend oneself enough to get away are important skills.
