I grabbed Pride and Persistence by Joe Chianakas during a flash Amazon sale, and I’m genuinely glad I picked it up.

As a martial arts instructor, I’m always on the lookout for stories that get the training mindset right. This book delivers.
One of my favorite aspects of the book is the heavy focus on studying your forms and putting in the work. Mr. Samuels hammers home a truth every martial artist needs to hear: our karate katas are more than just moves on the floor. They document self-defense strategies. Many martial arts schools focus on katas for a reason, and that’s it. Mr. Samuels is easily the coolest guy in the story (honestly, I’d like to hang out with him), and his lessons give the martial arts elements real weight.
What makes this book stand out from Singlets and Secrets is how much deeper and more complex the characters have become. Life isn’t black and white, and this book doesn’t pretend it is. Just when Aiden thinks he has things figured out, life throws another curveball and stacks the odds higher against him. Aiden isn’t presented as a flawless hero here—at times, he’s selfish, defensive, and plain frustrating. But, that’s what makes him feel like an actual high school sophomore. We’ve all been there. His flaws give characters like Camila and Michele room to stand out, and Camila is completely justified in how she handles him at first.
The tension between Aiden and Mateo brings out the biggest takeaway of the book: how hard it actually is to be open, honest, and vulnerable with the people you trust. Hiding things creates distance, and learning when to drop your guard is just as tough as learning how to keep it up.
With some great antagonists in Coach Krake and Tanner (I want to punch them both), plus an intriguing shift with Aiden’s mom near the end, the plot stays moving.
Whether you train in martial arts or not, if you’re a teen looking for an honest story about fighting through real-life chaos, give Pride and Persistence a read.
Fun Fact For Metamora Martial Arts Students…
Did you know Joe founded our program back in 2002? I first met him in as a teenager in 2003 and trained with him until 2011. I’ve had the great fortune to continue my friendship with Joe into adulthood. More than two decades later, and I’m still inspired by his tenacity and drive. He is a positive force in the lives of so many, and especially in the LGBTQ+ community.
Side Note
I found myself reading this aloud to my twins before bedtime. They got sleepier listening to me read this book than any of their baby books. I think that’s a good thing!
