As we head into a new year, many people set goals to get healthier, feel more confident, and take better care of themselves.

One of the simplest ways to do all three is by learning a few practical self-defense skills.

These are techniques that you can use in everyday situations, not just in a martial arts setting.

That’s why I’m excited to kick off 2026 with a special event at Metamora Martial Arts:

New Year, New Confidence: Practical Self-Defense for Everyday Life
📅 Saturday, January 24
⏰ 1:00–3:00 p.m.
💵 $30 per participant

This hands-on seminar is designed for teens and adults of all experience levels. No martial arts background is required.

Why Self-Defense Still Matters (Even as Crime Trends Improve)

You may have heard that crime nationwide has been decreasing, and that’s true.

According to the FBI’s 2024 Crime in the Nation report, violent crime dropped by approximately 4.5%, and property crime continued a multi-year downward trend.

Locally, the Peoria area has also seen declines in major categories, especially compared to five to ten years ago.

That’s good news, but it doesn’t mean awareness isn’t important.

Every year, people still encounter situations like:

  • walking alone to their car after work
  • jogging or exercising outdoors
  • traveling or unfamiliar environments
  • uncomfortable interactions at stores, gas stations, or parking lots
  • boundary-pushing behavior from acquaintances or strangers

Most self-defense situations aren’t dramatic.

They often come down to recognizing questionable behavior early and confidently removing yourself from the situation.

And that’s exactly what we’ll teach.

What You’ll Learn In The Seminar

This two-hour event mixes education, discussion, and plenty of hands-on practice.

You’ll learn:

  • Mindset & Awareness: What pre-attack cues to look for.
  • Setting Boundaries: How to assert yourself and de-escalate.
  • Fundamental Strikes & Targets: Learn what simple areas you can hit and how to hit them for maximum effectiveness.
  • Escape Techniques: If an encounter begins with a grab or a hold, know some options for getting out of it.

One of the goals of this seminar is to help you feel capable.

You don’t need to be a martial artist or an athlete.

You just need simple tools and a little practice.

Who Should Attend?

This seminar is ideal for:

  • adults 18+
  • beginners with no experience
  • anyone wanting to feel safer and more confident
  • college students
  • parents
  • teachers
  • runners/walkers
  • anyone with “New Year, New Me” energy

If you’re looking for a practical, supportive, welcoming environment to learn self-defense, this is it.
