My Story

I began my martial arts journey with Metamora Martial Arts in 2003 as a high school freshman under Sensei Joe Chianakas. After years of hard work and dedication, I earned my 1st-degree black belt in Shuri-ryu karate in 2006 and my 2nd-degree black belt in 2009. When Sensei Chianakas passed the program to me in 2012, I continued to teach until 2014 and returned to the dojo in 2021, re-establishing my commitment to the art. I also trained under Sensei Dave Hawkey from 2005 to 2015, learning valuable insights that helped shape my teaching approach.

In 2023, I made a transition to Shinmei Shorin-ryu karate, studying under Sensei James Gifford, Hanshi, the chief instructor for the International Okinawan Budo-Kai. I was honored to receive my 2nd-degree black belt in this style later that year.

Alongside my karate training, I began my journey in Chinese martial arts in 2010, studying tai chi chuan, Hsing-i chuan, and baguazhang under Si Tai Gung Steve Aldus. In 2019, I earned my certification as an assistant instructor (sifu) and later advanced to 2nd-degree black belt in 2023. My martial arts lineage can be traced back to 1602, connecting me to a long tradition of martial arts excellence.

Throughout my martial arts career, I’ve had the privilege of competing in and winning forms and sparring competitions across the Midwest. I’ve also been inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame three times: as Karate Black Belt of the Year (2014), Leading Seminar Instructor of the Year (2015), and Leading Martial Arts Instructor of the Year (2016). My journey has also been enriched by seminars with world-renowned instructors like former UFC champion Dan “The Beast” Severn, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, and Iain Abernethy.

Teaching martial arts is my passion, and I strive to create a welcoming, respectful environment where students of all levels can thrive. My goal is not only to teach techniques but also to help students develop confidence, discipline, and a love for the martial arts.

I live in Metamora with my wife and stepdaughter.
